There has been some changes to the Change Management Practitioner Certification. APMG International have changed the source text for the Change Management Foundation and Practitioner examinations, from the Effective Change Management Handbook to the Change Management Study Guide.

This change has resulted in a reduction in the amount of reading by about 300 pages!

What are the changes to the Change Management Certifications?

I have spent the last week reading, re-reading and marking up the new text so I can share my conclusions with you. I take this work very seriously because I appreciate that getting a certification is a big stepping stone to your career development. I didn’t want to communicate until I had a chance to complete a detailed analysis and create my own As Is and To Be model.

These are my conclusions, they are my personal view, they might not reflect yours, but I know many of you respect my expertise in this area, so wanted to share my perspective.

Why? – it has been 10 years since they launched this valuable and globally recognised Change Management qualification, so it was due for an update.

Scope – the updates more closely match the Body of Knowledge from the Change Management Institute. I am not sure how valuable this is. It is useful to have the view of a professional body but to have a well-rounded view of the change profession, don’t ignore the output from the Association for Change Management professionals, especially the standard, which is their collection of best practices.

Result – it has added some new thinking. It could have gone further but in being tied to the Body of Knowledge which itself is already feeling dated, it lacks the latest thinking. For example, we are an evolving profession, increasingly using agility, neuroscience, behavioural science, and positive psychology.

Impact – if you have taken the Change Management Foundation and want to complete your Change Management Practitioner using the same material, you have only until 20th September to do so. That’s why I’m running my last course on the week commencing 16th September.

Opportunity – the Practitioner certification is important evidence of your competence. It shows you know the most important and most well-known theories and models about change management. Changes to the syllabus and the book that the course is based upon don’t change that.

As you can see from my diagram, these examination changes do not give me any concern because I have always brought in the latest thinking and “in the moment” examples. I am very proud of my delivery of the Change Management Foundation and Practitioner course. You and your career development are in safe hands with me. Book your training with confidence, knowing that I will always deliver against these criteria.
